Nutrition Security

About
Nutrition Security

The majority of soda tax funds have been put toward helping create a more nutritionally secure San Francisco; especially during the COVID-19 epidemic. Nutrition security includes: food security – providing free or subsidized food; food access – increasing places people can purchase healthy food; healthy retail – helping small merchants stock fresh produce; urban agriculture – growing food; and nutrition education. Nutrition security is hindered by lack of money for healthy food, limited cooking space, food deserts, or lack of knowledge or time to cook healthfully. Soda tax funds have been shown to increase fruit and vegetable consumption as demonstrated by Vouchers4Veggies voucher program.*

Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates

BVHPCA began in 1994 as a grassroots organization, founded, governed, and operated by members of the Bayview Hunter’s Point (BVHP) neighborhood in SF. The organization combines community organizing with education, advocacy and direct services, with a focus on environmental and economic justice. BVHP is a racially diverse and predominantly low-income community that is often described as a food swamp, and has a history of community organizing to address long-standing environmental issues related to the decommissioned Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, and to ensure access to healthy foods.
